The Ford Focus RS is one of the greatest performance hatchbacks to ever drive on the face of the Earth, but, unfortunately, production of this pint-sized powerhouse is coming to an end after the 2018 model year.
Fortunately, however, Ford isn’t going to let this car go quietly into the night and is instead sending it out with a bang. Ford is producing a run of 1,500 Limited Edition Ford Focus RS cars for North America, 1,000 for the U.S. and 500 for Canada, which will be the last production run of this generation of Ford Focus RS ever.
If the thought of a world without the Focus RS makes your heart heavy, then it’s time to find out which Ford dealerships near you are going to be stocking this Limited Edition run.
When it came time to outfit and upgrade the Focus RS Limited Edition, Ford listened to their fan base and took cues from the recommendations and modifications that the enthusiasts were calling for.
The standard issue, and formidable, turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-4 EcoBoost engine, which produces 350 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, is now joined by the RS2 package, which includes things like voice-controlled navigation, heated Recaro seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated mirrors.
There’s also some nice visual upgrades like glossy black accent finishes on the roof, a rear spoiler, and mirror caps, along with 19-inch premium painted forged alloy wheels with blue RS center caps.
Most notably, Ford is adding a Quaife mechanical limited slip differential to the front axle. This is being integrated into the existing and impressive all-wheel-drive system, allowing the Ford Focus RS Limited Edition to carry more speed into a corner than the regular RS.
The limited slip differential limits engine torque to a front wheel with reduced traction, allowing the power to be sent to the wheel with more traction, reducing differences in wheel spin and stability. This system seamlessly integrates with the existing RS features, such as:
- Electronically controlled all-wheel-drive, which monitors the inputs from vehicle sensors 100 times per second and sends an average of 70% of engine power to the rear wheels.
- Dynamic torque vectoring and torque vectoring controls, which work together to distribute power intelligently between the rear wheels and apply small amounts of brake power to the front wheels, limiting front axle spin and improving traction.
- Selectable drive modes, including a drift mode for controlled oversteer and a launch mode for the best performance off the starting line, and our 4.7-second 0 to 62 miles-per-hour time.
The interior also sports carbon fiber accents around the door handles, interior gauges, and handbrake lever. To celebrate this legend of its own time, Ford is making it available in a new color, the appropriately named “Race Red.” “Nitrous Blue” is also still available.
