Car enthusiasts all over have been eagerly awaiting test drive results to come in for their favorite vehicles of 2018. Fortunately, that wait is over. Results are in, and the luxury design of the 2018 F-150 Lariat packs plenty of punch, making it an appealing option to anyone interested in an F-150. As your local Ford Indianapolis dealership, we feel it’s our duty to share the good news.
Don’t let the luxury tag on the Lariat fool you; it does more than hold a candle to other F-150 models. The first test drive against the 2018 F-150 XL, the designated “work truck” of the F-150 line, went exceedingly well for the Lariat. Its 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine is what gives the Lariat its punch.
The Lariat went from zero to 60 in 7.0 seconds flat before hitting the quarter-mile mark in 15.5 seconds while clocking in at 89.5 mph. Next up on the test track was the slightly less powerful F-150 XL’s 3.3-liter V6 engine. The XL did zero to 60 in 7.6 seconds and finished at the quarter-mile marker in 15.9 at 88.2 mph. Overall, their base engines were comparable in this test, although the Lariat is the clear victor.
Braking, on the other hand, more heavily favored the Lariat. The test involved both vehicles stopping from 60 to zero mph. The Lariat braked over a distance of 119 feet while the XL needed 129 feet, giving the Lariat around 8 percent more braking power than the work truck. The Lariat and the XL performed neck-to-neck when it came to G-force and turning on the figure-eight course. Both vehicles produced an average of 0.59 g with a lateral acceleration of 0.76 and 0.75 for the Lariat and XL, respectively.
So, with all the numbers out of the way, how did the Lariat feel? Driver Chris Walton gave nothing but praise for its comfort, precision, and responsiveness. There was just the right amount of feedback from with road without feeling every bump and crack in it. The Lariat’s high-quality and sturdy chassis provides the ideal level of balance that almost makes the truck feel like a high-end sedan. The XL, in comparison, was a bit rougher to drive, with more vibration from the steering wheel and a greater bouncy suspension.
Part of the charm the Lariat had during its test run comes from excellent interior design. The Lariat could easily pass as a luxury car that’s just a bit higher off the ground if you weren’t entirely paying attention. There’s plenty of soft plastic and padding all over the cabin, and it’s virtually impossible not to find a comfortable position for your legs and arms. The real wood trim over the doors and dashboard make the cabin feel luxurious and alive as you’re driving down the road.
The Lariat’s high-quality voice recognition system and speakers help to put you in another world as you drive. Are you looking for a little extra comfort and luxury for your next truck purchase?
